Award shows are a major part of any musician's life. They are a time when these artists can finally feel as if they made a big part of the music industry that year, or realize the extent of their separate fanbases as they fight it out for that honor. Sometimes calls of rigged are let out when one person wins over a favorite, and yet every year the same fandoms come back calling for more. No matter how many times people complain and views drop these shows will stay around as long as the music industry stays. One of these award shows being the AMAs.
The AMAs took place on November 24th to the screaming fans of Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello, and Billie Eilish. For what the AMAs lacked in a variety of categories they made up for in dozens of performances. From Dua Lipa who we haven't heard from in a while to Shania Twain( Man! I Feel Like A Woman). The span of performances definitely tried to fill space in an award show( with a lack of awards). Most of the performances were very lackluster, however, one of the best performances of the night belonged to Taylor's decade acceptance performance. Spanning her self titled debut album to "Lover". It had all of the stops( except for completely skipping the entire reputation era which is quite strange). From plenty of backup dancers to detailed stage sets she definitely took the award for best performance of the night. A close second place went to Halsey who went for her usual artistic dance. She backed it up with pretty stable vocals, so in turn, she was better than half of the performances that night. I have to give the third place to Camilla and Shawn because even though the performance was pretty much the same as the VMAs the vocals were pretty good, so I'll let them take the honor.
As for the awards that's when things took a pattern. For anything dealing with pop, Taylor swept the category. For RnB Khalid again swept the category. As for new artist, Billie Eilish took that honor whereas Taylor won best artist of the year while winning artist of the decade. Best Tour, Best Social Artist, and Best Group went to BTS. Sweeping all of their categories that they were nominated for. Rap mainly went to Old Town Road and Cardi B. Finally, Country was swept mainly by Carrie Underwood, and Dan and Shay.
As for my opinion on the award show as expected the quality ,in general, wasn't as amazing as it should have been. The repetition of the awards also made the show feel very put together. In turn, the performances also could've been a little more organized and a little more effort could've been brought. As expected the only good thing of the night was Taylor Swift. Are we shocked?
